Grand Auch Cœur de Gascogne intermunicipal community, a holder of the French accreditation label for heritage “Pays d’art et d’histoire”
The intermunicipal community brings together a range of areas of expertise for the 34 towns of the Grand Auch Cœur de Gascogne intermunicipal community. It oversees the Culture and Tourism area of expertise of the intermunicipal community and therefore the accredited heritage department too.
This department reveals the heritage of the city of Auch and of 33 towns around it. It works day to day with other in-house departments: The Auch Museum of the Americas, the cultural coordination department, the education department for children and teenagers, the parkland maintenance department, the urban planning department, the Digital Uses and Data department, etc. The tourism information centre is in charge of marketing and bookings for one aspect of its activities.
The French accreditation label for heritage “Villes et Pays d’art et d’histoire” and the state’s scientific support
France’s culture ministry has certified the heritage department of the Grand Auch Cœur de Gascogne intermunicipal community with its accreditation label for heritage – “Villes et Pays d’art et d’histoire”. Our heritage department has therefore joined a national network of 209 other areas of France certified with this special accreditation label for heritage.
This accreditation involves an official agreement, financial and technical support from France’s culture ministry, and an obligation to employ properly qualified workers. Today, it serves as a tool for managing the local area, designed for local inhabitants, and as a tool for showcasing heritage, designed for tourists. Educating young people is also a key mission that the accreditation involves.
Thirty sites accredited in Frances Occitania region
Thirteen towns: Carcassonne (Aude department), Narbonne (Aude department), Millau (Aveyron department), Beaucaire (Gard department), Nîmes (Gard department), Uzès (Gard department), Toulouse (Haute-Garonne department), Béziers (Hérault department), Perpignan (Pyrénées-Orientales department), Castres (Tarn department), Gaillac (Tarn department), Moissac (Tarn-et-Garonne department), Montauban (Tarn-et-Garonne department).
Seventeen areas: Pyrénées Cathares (Ariège department), Bastides du Rouergue (Aveyron department), Rodez urban area (Aveyron department), Vidourle Camargue (Gard and Hérault departments), Grand Auch Cœur de Gascogne (Gers department), Haut Languedoc et Vignobles (Hérault department), Lodévois et Larzac (Hérault department), Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole (Hérault department), Pays de Pézenas (Hérault department), Grand Cahors (Lot department), Causses et Vallée de la Dordogne (Lot department), Grand Figeac Vallées du Lot et du Célé (Lot department), Mende et Lot en Gévaudan (Lozère department), Vallées d’Aure et du Louron (Hautes-Pyrénées department), Conflent Canigó (Pyrénées-Orientales department), Vallées Catalanes (Pyrénées-Orientales department), Pays Midi-Quercy (Tarn-et-Garonne department).
Official “Ville et Pays d’art et d’histoire” consultants, the French public body for local cultural activities, and the French regional cultural affairs division’s departments for historical monuments and archaeology also support the Grand Auch Cœur de Gascogne intermunicipal community from day to day. Indeed, the accredited heritage department benefits from their scientific and technical support.

The Occitania region’s inventory department
France’s Occitania region supports our accredited heritage department’s mission in applied research through its department of knowledge and heritage inventory. It educates and supports this department’s inventory officer in knowledge of heritage in the Grand Auch Cœur de Gascogne intermunicipal community.
The Gers department
France’s Gers department implements a policy in culture and tourism throughout its administrative area. It directly manages certain cultural facilities. It also supports heritage projects such as those spearheaded by our own accredited heritage department.
The Gers council for architecture, urban planning and the environment (CAUE)
The purpose of the French local councils for architecture, urban planning and the environment is to inform and advise individuals and local authorities about architecture, urban planning and the environment and to raise their awareness of these fields. These councils are made up of architects and landscape designers. They act in the interests of the general public, of their local French department and of their local municipalities and intermunicipal communities. There are many cultural explanatory activities organised each year in the local area in a partnership between our accredited heritage department and the Gers council for architecture, urban planning and the environment (CAUE).
Sites et Cités Remarquables de France
The national association Sites et Cités Remarquables de France offers professional and political gatherings that tackle several issues, such as links between tourism and heritage and urban planning, or links between heritage and sustainable development.
Local associations
The accredited heritage department partners with many local associations on a daily basis. It organises guided tours, conferences and other activities that showcase heritage and architecture for members of the associations Les Amis du Vieil Auch et Alentours and Société archéologique du Gers. It can support associations with heritage-showcasing projects in the 34 towns of the intermunicipal community. It also helps promote and share tools managed by the associations Histoire de transmettre and Les Francas du Gers.
